When my kids were little, reading books to and with them was a daily activity, one we enjoyed tremendously. Observing their delight in learning new things, their surprise and their pleasure at discoveries, and their inevitable growing enchantment with words, was a reward in itself.
Yet that was only the cherry on top.
It is a fact that exposure to books enriched my children’s lives. They learned about places, cultures, and people. They acquired knowledge and an expanded vocabulary. They learned how to structure a proper sentence and how to tell a story. They developed ideas and discovered that which resonated with their heart and soul.
My kids’ early and ongoing exposure to books, contributed much to the young adults, they are today: Intelligent, articulate, thoughtful, compassionate, and curious.
I admit that reading to my kids was not much of a sacrifice. It was an activity inspired by a passion for books and by the joy of spending time with them. Reading stimulated discussion, expression, and sharing experiences. I got to know them. Better yet, they got to know them.
I know that reading every evening to or with children is not an easy undertaking for many. Life is hectic. Parents and kids seem more occupied these days with solo activities. Yet, it is vital to stop as often as possible and gift your children with the gift of reading. You and your kids will benefit greatly now and forever.
When you look back and remember the lovely hours spent reading together, you will all do so with longing and gratitude.
