cropped-hebrew-alphabet-cover-fb-modification13.jpgThe major toy outlets provide lists these days that advise shoppers of the “hottest toy lists” and “must haves” for the kids in your gifting list.  But few of the toys marketed for kids have inherent values that will help them develop or enhance their social skills.  The Toys R Us’ toys that top year’s suggestions is the “Despicable Me” talking figure, for which they charge between $60 and $70!  This toy should be rejected, if only for its name.  What kind of message does it relay to kids?  Another popular toy choice, the $80 “First Talking Vanity”, encourages little girls to make themselves pretty. Sad and destructive, for its message is that the little girls are not good enough just the way they are!  And the third on the store’s top toy list is the $30 “The Ugglys” from the “Gross Electronic Pup-Pet”!  And we wonder why so many kids today behave as they do, with no respect for self or for others.

Do the kids in your life a kindness and do not indulge their demand for the most popular toys.  Those  will be discarded in no time and leave behind nothing but credit card bills.  Instead, treat the kids you care for with true love, one that considers what is good for them. Rather than expensive toys lacking in value and worth, purchase books with good values, digital or print, and you will be contributing to the kids’ intellectual and emotional well-being.  Read with them or to them and you will also promote their chances for developing into responsible, productive, successful and fulfilled individuals.

If you do have a larger budget, you may consider the KINDLE, which comes in many sizes and prices, from $69 to over $200 (http://tinyurl.com/lxc7282).

List of appropriate books are easily found on Amazon.com and other online books stores.  MazorBooks invites you to peruse their list of Children’s Books with Good Values.  Please visit http://www.MazorBooks.com/amazon.htm.

DucksCover500I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington
by Mark Eichler

American kids do not know much about their country’s history, according to national tests.  America’s story has been unfolding for less than 240 years, not a very long period in the scheme of things.  Yet ignorance of American history amongst the youth prevails.  Perhaps schools could and should do better, but I submit that parents too can enrich the knowledge base of their kids by choosing the right books! And it’s never too early.

In his new book, I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington, Mark Eichler provides the opportunity for kids to travel with Abey to the National Mall in Washington D.C.   I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington is the story of a family road trip in which important national sites are introduced to the young reader, including Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial and at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Parents and caregivers: This is a beautiful illustrated book, with the national sites accurately depicted (Illustrations by Clarisa Adonay). Your children will fall in love with Abey and enjoy his adventures as they learn about America’s past. This book is appropriate for kids between the ages of four and eight.

In Honor of Veterans Day: MazorBooks Releases “I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington”

DucksCover500I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington
by Mark Eichler

The national observance of Veterans Day reminds me of my father’s objection to the annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day holidays. My father, Of Blessed Memory, claimed that all children (once they acquire the ability to reason), regardless of their age, should celebrate mothers and fathers every day. He argued that the awareness of the gift of parental love and caring should not be limited to just one day a year.

Similarly, I submit that in every single day of every year veterans should be respected, loved, appreciated and honored for their contribution to our country and to our lives.

Yet, just as we marked the annual appointed day for the celebration of parents despite my father’s objection (and he liked it!), we at MazorBooks stand up today on Veterans Day and salute our brave and dedicated countrymen and women for their service, their sacrifice and their devotion to the people of the United States and the values of our great country.

In honor of Veterans day, MazorBooks is releasing its newest children’s book by Mark Eichler, I Want to Pet the Ducks: Abey Goes to Washington. It is the story of a family road trip to the National Mall in Washington D.C., in which tribute is given to our fallen soldiers at the WWII Memorial and at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

ImageWhat is the basic reason for celebrating the holiday of Chankuah, or Hanukkah as it is more commonly known?

Chanukah is the ‘Festival of Dedication’ as well as the ‘The Festival of Lights’.  The holiday commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks in 165 B.C.E. (Before the Common Era).  It also honors the memory of the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.  The temple had been defiled by the Greeks who, among other things, erected a statue of Zeus in the temple’s Holy of Holies.  (The Holy of Holies is a term in the Hebrew Bible which refers to the inner sanctuary of the Temple in Jerusalem, which hosted the Ark of the Covenant.) Each night of the festival an additional the Menorah (an eight branch candelabra) is lit, starting with one candle and adding another each night,  until on the last night, eight candles are burning. According to tradition, when the Temple was re-captured, only one small vessel of consecrated oil — enough for just one day — was found. Miraculously, it sufficed for eight days until new oil could be prepared and the festival was established for this length of time to commemorate the miracle.

Chanukah is a joyous holiday, celebrated every year by Jews around the world with the lighting of candles, traditional Chanukah treats such as potato latkes (fried potato pancakes) and donuts, games such as Draidel (a specially constructed spinning top), and Chanukah Gelt (Chanukah money or gifts) for children.

How to Chanukah is a children’s picture book that explains why we celebrate eight days of Chanukah every year. Lovely and lighthearted rhymes describe the miracle of the one little untainted can of oil found in Holy Temple, with enough oil for one night’s lighting, which lasted for the full eight days.

How to Chanukah also recommends that Chanukah gifts should be of the literary kind, and urges parents to purchase books with good values for their children.

For extensive coverage of the how, why, when and more about the Holiday of Chanukah, you may wish to visit the MazorGuide Jewish Holidays website at http://www.mazornet.com/holidays/Chanukah/home.htm.

The Power of Words! Talk POSITIVE.

In a society that generally appreciates self-deprecation there is a danger of taking it too far.   Indeed, when repeating certain phrases, such as “I am such a klutz (slang for clumsy)”, or “there I go again, forgetful me” – we may start believing these statements and worse, develop a reputation of being a klutz or a forgetful person.  It is much healthier, psychologically speaking, to limit “down-speaking” about ourselves or perhaps even eliminating it from our repertoire.  ESPECIALLY in front of our kids.  At a young age the ‘cleverness’ or intended humor inherent in self-deprecation does not register with children, who generally understand things literally. Thus, parents serve their children far better, by being kind to themselves and teaching their children the art of positive speak.

Children often disparage themselves with phrases such as: “I can’t do it!,” or “It’s too hard for me,” or “I am not as smart as my brother or sister.”  Parents, even good ones, often just let these expressions of frustration pass.  But words and thoughts have power.  They can build and they can destroy.

A time-tested way of helping kids develop a kinder more optimistic attitude toward themselves and promoting kids’ self-esteem and self-confidence is by encouraging them to self-affirm.  Positive affirmations and merited approval – work, especially when associated with good values and achievements (small or big).

Parents and teachers, whose objective is to foster emotional health, self-esteem and self-confidence in children must be proactive in their relationship with children.  Studies confirm that the impact of constructive and positive verbal directives and exchanges between adults and children influence the children’s feelings of self-worth, self- esteem and self-efficacy.

There is ample research that shows the advantage in school and later in their professional life that children with positive self-esteem have over kids whose perception of self is critical or harsh. For what is self-esteem but the “self-evaluation of competence in certain domains of functioning?” (Szente, 2007).  Indeed, the earlier children learn to manage the quality of their thoughts about and perceptions of themselves the better they are prepared to deal successfully with future challenges, and the more they are likely to achieve success and fulfillment in life.

With that in mind I authored Positive Affirmations for Little Girls and Positive Affirmations for little Boys.  Check them out.   You and the children you love will benefit from reading and rereading these lovely affirmations, as they promote good-feel and optimism that fuel the body and the soul.

ImageFREE on Amazon on November 5, 2013 (Amazon promotion begins after midnight – PACIFIC time)

Michali Mazor offers her inspiring eBook FREE of charge on November 5th, 2013, for all children to enjoy!

– When I Grow Up What Will I Be? is a question many kids grapple with, and this little book is here to help. What I Want to Be When I Grow Up inspires kids to embrace possibilities and anticipate the future with a positive ‘Yes I Can’ attitude, but reminds them to celebrate who they are right now!

Michali Mazor, the 15-year-old author of When I Grow Up, shares her own musings of childhood as she describes in adorable rhymes and lovely illustrations the many professions (and adventures) she contemplated. What I Want to Be When I Grow Up inspires kids to embrace possibilities and anticipate the future with a positive ‘Yes I Can’ attitude. But while Michali encourages kids to dream about the future and think of the many options available to them she also reminds them to celebrate who they are today.

It is important to encourage children to dream and have ambitions. As well, it is wonderful to inspire children’s imagination. But never should kids (or their parents) forget to enjoy and appreciate what and who they are right now!
