How to say HELLO is probably the first thing one wants to know when learning a new language. So how do Hebrew speakers greet each other?
The most common word used to say hello and goodbye is
Greeting one another in peace is a custom that dates back to the days of the TALMUD (Beginning of the third to the end of the fifth century).
However, the influence of English and other languages have made their mark. Nowadays, many Israelis say “Hi” when they meet, “Bye” when they part, and “Hello” (pronounced ‘hallo’ or ‘allo’) when answering their phone.
Of course, there are lots of other greetings, appropriate for the time of day, special days like the Sabbath, holidays, and special occasions. Here are some common greetings!
