Hebrew, the language of the Bible, is alive and well. Hebrew was revived in the 1800s by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the father of Modern Hebrew and is the official language of the State of Israel. Contemporary Hebrew is to a large extent the same Hebrew spoken way back when, however, the language has evolved some overtime.
Modern Hebrew accommodates societal, environmental, scientific, technological, and new-age innovation. There are Hebrew words for modern-day phenomena, but English, Latin, and other international words infiltrated spoken Hebrew.
Hebrew speakers use words such as telephone, television, and bacteria, but language purists prefer using newly coined Hebrew.
Most new Hebrew words rely on the roots of words found in the Bible.
EXAMPLES
Biblical “Chashav” – the verb to think – past tense.
New words from same root (חשב)
MACH-SHEV – Computer
MACH-SHE-VON – Calculator
Biblical “Rechev” – vehicle/mode of transportation
New words from same root (רבב)
RA-KE-VEL – Cable Car
RA-KE-VET – Train
