Ancient Hebrew was written without vowels.

The current vowels system, or the nekudot (points/dots), came into existence around the 8th century, when the rabbis living in ancient Judea realized the need for aids to pronunciation and devised a system of vowels, used to this very day. The vocalization marks of dots and dashes are referred to in Hebrew as nikud or nekudot (dots/points).

The nekudot appear above, below or inside the letter, and do not change the spacing of the line. Text containing these markings is referred to as “pointed” text.

Nikud

There is a host of additional vocalization marks, but their sounds are so similar to the ones listed above that even Hebrew speakers would not notice the difference.

Torah scrolls do not contain nekudot, nor do over 90% of contemporary printed books, magazines, etc. You will, however, find nekudot in prayer books, Tanach books (Old Testament), poetry volumes, children’s books and in Hebrew-for-beginners books.

In this blog we will use nekudot. The stories of the Hebrew Alphabet are coming, but is a bit more basic information coming your way before the letters begin telling their tale.
